Mining activities, while essential for economic development, have occasionally posed challenges to nearby communities, including structural damage to homes due to vibrations and air blasts from blasting operations. In line with its mission to support vulnerable communities and safeguard the wellbeing of local residents, The Bushbaby Foundation played an instrumental role in facilitating swift repairs to homes affected by such mining impacts in Kanakantapa Resettlement.
Earlier this year, community members in Kanakantapa raised concerns about structural cracks that had emerged in homes situated close to an active mining site. Among the affected properties were the home of Mr. Siwale—a respected local resident—and a teacher’s house at Evergreen Primary School. Both structures had sustained visible damage, raising fears about their long-term stability and safety.
After learning about the issue, The Bushbaby Foundation promptly collaborated with relevant stakeholders to ensure a thorough on-site assessment was conducted. The findings confirmed that both houses had suffered significant cracking, which threatened their habitability and overall integrity.
Demonstrating its long-standing commitment to community development and social responsibility, the Foundation helped coordinate a response that led to the complete repair and rehabilitation of the damaged structures. The work included stabilizing walls, sealing structural cracks, and restoring the properties to safe living conditions.
Mr. Siwale expressed deep appreciation for the intervention, stating that the prompt response not only restored his home but also strengthened his trust in organizations that prioritize community welfare.
This initiative reflected The Bushbaby Foundation’s core values of care, partnership, and action—ensuring that development in Zambia goes hand in hand with respect for human dignity and environmental responsibility.
By proactively engaging in this repair effort, The Bushbaby Foundation reaffirmed its role as a bridge between industry and community, advocating for sustainable practices and swift remediation when challenges arise.
